Asset Allocation for 2nd Quarter 2014

There are no changes to our Insightful Asset Allocation targets for this quarter, but we have made some adjustments to a few of our model portfolios including our Fidelity Investments Model Portfolio, our Easy Mutual Fund Portfolio, and our Easy ETF Portfolio. We have also made several changes to the Mutual Funds we are using in some of our model portfolios. In some cases this was due to fund closings while in other cases it was because funds were no longer available at  multiple brokerages.  Another significant change to the funds in our portfolios is to only show open funds in the Easy Mutual Fund Portfolio and the ETF and Mutual Fund Portfolio. If you are already invested in these funds you do not have to replace them unless you see a fund on our lists that you like better. This should be of help to any new subscribers.

We are making wholesale changes to our group of Short Term Bond funds in order to get a better income profile by replacing them with Fidelity Limited Term Bond (FJRLX), Baird Short-Term Bond (BSBSX), and BlackRock Low Duration Bond (BLDAX).

Looking over our list of Small Cap funds we found that all of our favorites had closed, so we have added some new mutual funds to our list Glenmede Small Cap Equity (GTCSX), Hodges Small Cap (HDPSX)Rice Hall James Small Cap (RHJMX), ASTON/Silvercrest Small Cap (ASCTX), and Driehaus Emerging Markets Small Cap (DRESX).

Mutual Fund, ETF, and Financial Markets Update April 2014

The political turmoil in the Ukraine and signals from the FED that they may begin to raise rates sooner than previously thought, led to a jump in volatility for financial markets in the first quarter of 2014. In spite of this, the Barclay’s Aggregate Bond Index and the S&P 500 were both up 1.8% over the past three months. That being said, there was a change in the winds to start the new year as stock investors pushed up value stocks while taking down the 2013 market leading growth stocks. While value stocks were up 2.3% for the month, growth stocks were actually down (1.1%) in March which resulted in a 2.9% gain in value stocks for the quarter, while growth stock returns were only 1.1%. The big winner for the quarter was REITs with a gain of 9.9%, while the big surprise was a 7.1% gain for Long Treasury Bonds. The only loser on our index list was Emerging Equities which fell slightly by losing (0.4%).

Investment Returns as of March 2014

Investment Returns as of March 2014

The best performing Bond categories were those that had a difficult 2013 as both Loomis Sayles Core Plus Bond (NERYX) and Fidelity New Markets Income (FNMIX) were both up 3.6%. Other strong results came from Dreyfus International Bond (DIBAX) which gained 2.8% and Fidelity High Income (SPHIX) which rose 2.4%

Sector funds led the way in Equities as Cohen & Steers Realty Shares (CSRSX) spiked up 9.7% in the first quarter of 2014 while Oppenheimer SteelPath MLP Alpha (MLPAX) added 4.6%. Domestically, value funds performed the best as American Century Mid Cap Value (ACMVX) gained 4.0%, Heartland Value Plus (HRVIX) rose 3.1% and FMI Large Cap (FMIHX) returned 2.5%.  In contrast to the US, Small Cap stocks outperformed overseas as Harding Loevner International Small Company (HLMSX) gained 3.9% while Harding Loevner Emerging Markets (HLEMX) bucked the trend in Emerging markets by staying positive with a 0.7% return. On the down side, volatility once again hammered Managed Futures as our best performing fund in that space over the last few years, AQR Managed Futures Strategy (AQMNX) lost (6.1%), while Wasatch Emerging Markets Small Cap (WAEMX) fell (3.0%).

ETF returns highlight a change of character in financial markets in the new year. iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond (TLT) gained 7.6% while PowerShares Emerging Markets Sovereign Debt (PCY) rose 4.9% and iShares S&P MidCap 400 Value Index (IJJ) picked up 4.0%. Other strong performers were PowerShares Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) which rose 3.4% and iShares Russell Microcap Index (IWC) which was up 3.1%. Turn around stories topped the international charts as iShares MSCI Australia Index (EWA) gained 6.2% and iShares MSCI Brazil Index (EWZ) returned 0.8%.

A big contrast between 2013 and the first quarter of 2014 can be seen in Sector ETFs. PowerShares DB Agriculture (DBA) was up a surprising 16.8% while Utilities Select Sector SPDR (XLU) picked up 10.1%. On the other hand, early warning signs of trouble come from two ETFs that had positive quarters, but were hammered in March. SPDR S&P Biotech (XBI), a high flyer in 2013 collapsed (12.8%) for the month while iShares Silver Trust (SLV) dropped (6.4%).
